What to expect in a therapy session

Therapy aims to work collaboratively with clients to increase their understanding of themselves and help them live their best lives.

Initial Consultation and Assessment

This first session is about getting to know you and your needs. Your psychologist will ask questions about your main reason for seeing a psychologist, goals, mental health history, relationship and social history, education and occupation history, medical history, and any other relevant areas so that they can fully understand your current concerns. They may also ask you to complete questionnaires or other assessment tools. The goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of your situation and goals and to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Goal Setting

Based on the information gathered during the assessment, you and your psychologist will work together to define your therapy goals. These goals will provide direction and focus for your sessions. For example, a goal might be to “reduce anxiety symptoms”, “improve communication skills”, or “return to work”.

Formulation, Psychoeducation & Treatment Planning

Once your goals are established, and an adequate assessment of your history has been conducted, your psychologist will discuss the likely factors that have been important in the onset and maintenance of your concerns. They will provide information to assist you to better understand your current challenges and will work collaboratively to develop a treatment plan. This plan may involve specific therapy techniques, strategies for managing symptoms, and recommendations for activities or exercises to practice outside of sessions. This will be tailored to your unique needs and preferences.

Ongoing Sessions

Ongoing therapy sessions are 50- 55 minutes, typically conducted weekly, providing a safe and confidential space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

These sessions are a collaborative process where you and your psychologist work together to address your challenges, develop coping skills, and work toward your goals.

Progress Evaluation

Throughout your therapy, your psychologist will regularly check in with you to assess your progress toward your goals. This may involve discussing your experiences, reviewing your symptoms, completing questionnaires, and evaluating the effectiveness of the treatment strategies. If appropriate, a summary report may be sent to your referrer at certain points in treatment (e.g. GP).

Confidentiality

Your privacy is of utmost importance. Your psychologist is bound by strict ethical and legal obligations regarding the handling of your information and this will be discussed with you initially and at relevant points during treatment.

Psychology Costs

The cost of therapy varies based on the experience of the psychologist. Our fee page outlines the costs and rebates available.

Neuropsychological and Developmental assessment costs vary based on the length and complexity required. Please call for a quote for assessments.
