What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological difference involving structural and neurochemical variations within the brain, which are present from birth.

These differences mainly impact one’s executive functioning, or what is referred to as our “control centre”. This is the “doing” part of the brain. Children and adults with ADHD struggle with their performance and efficiency on a task but often retain other areas of cognitive functioning such as intelligence.

Difficulty paying attention is a major hallmark of ADHD. However, this aspect is often misunderstood as not being able to pay attention, when in actuality, difficulties arise because the ADHD brain pays attention to everything.

Common symptoms of ADHD

  • Inattention: difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, distractibility
  • Hyperactivity: restlessness, fidgeting, impulsivity
  • Impulsivity: acting without thinking, interrupting others, difficulty waiting for a turn
  • Lateness and forgetfulness
  • Difficulty with organisation and prioritising tasks
  • Poor time management
  • Difficulty with relationships and social interactions
  • Low self-esteem and self-worth
  • Anxiety in certain situations that are challenging because of their ADHD

Our ADHD Assessment Process

Our comprehensive ADHD assessments are designed to provide a clear understanding of your cognitive profile and determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD, or whether your symptoms are better accounted for by another condition. Our process includes:

1. Initial Call

When you first call the practice, one of our assessment booking team will speak to you and find out your assessment needs and background details so that we can provide advice as to what type of assessment might be most appropriate for you.

They will also determine the right team member to conduct the assessment and provide availability options. If there is uncertainty about what type of assessment might suit you best, they will suggest a 1 hour session with one of our psychologists to conduct a formal assessment of your needs.

2. Background Information Gathering

We then send out a detailed questionnaire to gather your history and current concerns. We also request any background information you might have, such as school report cards or other assessment reports.

3. Psychological Interview (1 to 1.5 hours)

We then have a one-on-one discussion with you to explore your experiences, challenges and history. For children, this includes a parent/guardian interview.

4. Cognitive Skill Assessment (2 to 5 hours)

You will then complete a tailored assessment evaluating cognitive functions, which may include measures of attention, executive functioning, processing speed, intellectual function and learning skills. This generally involves puzzles, games and other tasks usually completed on an iPad

5. Additional Questionnaires

Where applicable, we may ask parents, family members or teachers to complete questionnaires.

6. Detailed Report

Approximately four weeks after the assessment is completed, we then compile and provide a comprehensive report which covers the following areas:

  • Summary of background and symptoms.
  • Assessment results and explanation of what the results mean.
  • A diagnosis, if appropriate. A diagnosis is not guaranteed.
  • Recommendations are tailored to the individual but could include areas such as the following:
    • Executive Function Strategies: Time management, organisation, and planning tips.
    • Academic/Workplace Accommodations: Tailored support for learning and productivity.
    • Behavioural & Emotional Strategies: Managing impulsivity, inattention, and emotional reactivity.
    • Coping & Stress Management: Techniques for daily challenges and resilience.
    • Social & Communication Skills: Improving interactions and building relationships.
    • Parenting Guidance: Effective strategies for supporting children with ADHD.
    • Referrals & Resources: These connect you with relevant support networks.
    • Self-Care & Well-being: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
    • Recommendations regarding psychological therapy: Modality and focus of therapy.
7. Feedback Session (1 hour)

This is an optional but highly recommended session to discuss the report and answer any questions.

8. Ongoing Support

We offer ongoing psychological therapy and support to help you manage ADHD and the associated challenges.
