What to Expect from Therapy
Your First Therapy Session
Your first appointment is an opportunity to talk through what has brought you to therapy and what you hope to change. Your therapist will ask questions to understand your history, current concerns, strengths, and goals.
Sessions run for 50 minutes. Together, you and your therapist will develop a clear, manageable plan for therapy. Everything discussed is confidential within the limits of the law (your therapist will explain these limits in your first session).
How Therapy Works
Therapy is a collaborative process. Between sessions, you may be invited to practice new skills, notice patterns or try different approaches; progress occurs in the therapy room but especially in your daily life.
How Long Does Therapy Take?
The number of sessions depends on your goals, the nature of your concerns and how frequently you attend. Many people attend weekly for a short period of 6 to 10 weeks, while others might find ongoing support helpful for longer periods. Your therapist will discuss this with you and regularly review your progress.
What Makes Therapy Effective?
Research shows that the therapeutic relationship and client motivation and readiness to change are strong predictors of positive outcomes.
Our team prioritise creating a safe, respectful space where you feel heard and understood. Combined with evidence-based approaches, we believe this partnership gives you the best chance of achieving meaningful change.

Therapy Fees & Medicare Rebates
We believe quality therapy should be accessible. We offer several funding options:
Medicare Rebates
If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for therapy sessions with a Psychologist. Rebates vary depending on whether you see a registered Psychologist or a Clinical Psychologist. With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you can access:
- Up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year
- Higher rebates when seeing a Clinical Psychologist
- More information on medicare rebates can be found on our fees page here
Other Funding Options
- NDIS: Self-managed or plan-managed participants
- WorkCover: Accepted for approved claims
- Defence and DVA: Bupa and Open Arms programs
- Private Health Insurance: Depending on your level of cover and insurer
Session Fees
Fees vary depending on the type of clinician you see. For detailed fee information and current rebate amounts, please visit our fees page or contact our admin team.

Finding the Right Therapist in Brisbane for Your Needs
Choosing a therapist is an important decision. Here's what to consider:
Qualifications Matter
All our therapists are registered Psychologists, which means they've completed extensive university training (minimum 5 years) and are registered with AHPRA. This ensures you're receiving professional, ethical, and evidence-based care. As a centre of excellence, our Psychologists all hold Master's or Doctorate level degrees.
Experience
Different therapists have different areas of expertise. When you contact us, we'll discuss your concerns and match you with a counsellor who has experience in those areas.
Therapeutic Fit
The relationship between you and your therapist matters. Our team works hard to find you the right fit and approach for you as an individual. With a large team, we can match you with someone that meets your needs.
Accessibility
Located in Ashgrove with free parking, lift access and public transport options, our practice is convenient for people across Brisbane's inner north and CBD.

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy in Brisbane
What is the difference between a therapist, counsellor, psychologist and psychiatrist?Â
The terms can be confusing because each role provides support for mental health and wellbeing. The main differences relate to training and the type of support they offer.
Therapist: A broad term for someone who provides talk-based mental health support. Psychologists, counsellors and social workers can all be described as therapists.
Counsellor: Counsellors offer short-term emotional support and guidance. Training can vary significantly, so qualifications range from short courses to university degrees.
Psychologists: Psychologists complete extensive university training (minimum 5 years) and are registered with the Psychology Board of Australia. They use evidence-based approaches to assess, understand and treat mental health concerns. Psychologists can provide therapy, psychological assessments, and treatment planning. They cannot prescribe medication.
Psychiatrist: Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health. They can diagnose conditions, provide medical treatment and prescribe medication. Some psychiatrists also provide therapy.
At Hardwick Psychological Services, therapy is provided by registered Psychologists, Clinical Psychologists and Neuropsychologists.
How much does therapy cost in Brisbane?
Fees vary depending on whether you see a registered Psychologist or a Clinical Psychologist. Medicare rebates are available if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, which can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs. We also accept NDIS, WorkCover and DVA funding. For specific fee information, please view our fees page or contact our team.
Can I claim therapy on Medicare?
Yes. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you can claim Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year. You'll need to see your GP first to obtain the referral and Mental Health Care Plan. Your GP will also conduct a review session after the first 6 sessions. There are several other Medicare reimbursable referrals including:
- Chronic Condition Management Plan (up to 5 rebated sessions per year)
- Eating Disorders Management Plan (up to 40 rebated sessions per year)
- Non-Directive Pregnancy Support Counselling (up to 3 rebated sessions per year)
- Complex Neurodevelopmental Conditions Plan
Do I need a referral to see a therapist?
No. You don't need a referral to book therapy with us. However, if you want to claim Medicare rebates, you'll need a Mental Health Care Plan (or other plan) and referral from your GP.
How do I know if I need therapy?
People see a therapist for many reasons. You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, low in mood or wanting support with a life change. If something is affecting your wellbeing, relationships, work or day-to-day functioning, therapy may be helpful. Many people seek support for everyday challenges or personal growth.
How long does therapy take to work?
This varies depending on your goals and concerns. Some people notice improvements within 4-6 sessions, particularly for focused issues. More complex or long-standing concerns may benefit from longer-term therapy. Your psychologist will discuss realistic timeframes with you and regularly review your progress.
Do you see children and teens?
Yes. We provide therapy for children aged 6 years and older (depending on the therapist), as well as adolescents and adults of all ages. Our therapists adapt their approach to be age-appropriate and engaging for younger clients.
Do you offer ADHD and autism assessments?Â
Yes. We offer comprehensive ADHD assessments, autism assessments and neuropsychology assessments for children, teens and adults. Therapy is also available for people who are neurodivergent or adjusting to a new diagnosis. Learn more about our assessment services.
Is therapy confidential?Â
Yes. Everything you discuss in therapy is confidential, with some legal exceptions (such as if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if there are child protection concerns). Your therapist will explain confidentiality limits in your first session.Â
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. We offer secure video and phone telehealth options.
